Old Mother Regan, Protest Song
Amber waves
of grain
stretch out to the
heavens
choked by
star spangled slogan endorsed
Halliburton smog.
Purple mountains majesty
dotted with Walmart billboards
do a mechanized jig over the graves of
small business,
bellowing the repeated
mantra of
“Everyday Low Prices.”
The fruited plain
dried and abandoned,
soon to be the site of
new high rise condos.
A generation of farmers
herded into their local superstore
to work as greeters and cashiers.
To push carts across a blacktop
covered landscape
of SUV’s and mini vans.
To die younger than their parents
from stress
and poor health care.
Dieing quiet and submissive
with the fear of being fired
balanced upon their aching, hunched
over shoulders.
Romney 2012.
